Affordable Endocrinology and Chronic Joint/Muscle Care
Pricing is less than half the “fair price” as determined by healthcarebluebook.com, who determines the reasonable amount you should pay for a medical service. It’s calculated from a nationwide database of medical payment data and customized to this geographic area. Essentially it is the amount that you can expect to pay in total (copay + the remainder you will receive in the mail later until you meet your deductible. Remember that insurance companies usually do not count the copay/coinsurance toward your deductible.
Why be a Private Community Clinic?
This is a non-government community clinic. Most community clinics are either free clinics staffed by part-time doctors and staff, or they are funded by government sources. This clinic is private and therefore free from most of the bureaucracy of government and corporate entanglements, and thus able to operate at low costs while still providing a high level of personalized service for very reasonable fees. This is only practical if we focus on certain areas of endocrinology and chronic musculoskeletal problems restricted to an ambulatory (non-hospital) setting.
Dr. Barnett uses BOTH conventional medical approaches AND the best of alternative approaches to treat a variety of common endocrine (hormone) diseases, with an emphasis on thyroid disease / Hashimoto hypothyroidism.

Hashimoto Thyroiditis Emphasis
Treatment of Hashimoto Thyroiditis is far and away the main medical condition treated in Dr. Barnett’s practice. He is confident in providing the best clinical approach to protect the thyroid and improve symptoms, while still preserving bone health, which is a concern when using Synthroid (levothyroxine) or other non-glandular medications.
Integrative RheumatologyDr. Barnett mixes regular medicine with acupuncture, spinal adjustments and traction to create a custom approach for each patient’s needs and preferences, which is an alternative to typical chiropractic or conventional medical approaches. His rheumatology emphasis is on Fibromyalgia and other chronic non-inflammatory problems, especially of the spine utilizing a combination of joint manipulation, trigger point work, acupuncture, injections, prescription medications, and evidence-based supplements.
Dr. Barnett provides an integrative medicine approach to spine care, Fibromyalgia, and other chronic joint problems that have arisen from minor acute injuries, the effects of old injuries, irregular anatomy, repetitive stresses, and osteoarthritis,
He combines the most time tested and evidence based aspects of traditional medicine such as spinal manipulation, clinical nutrition, and acupuncture with the most conservative aspects of conventional medicine, such as injections, traction, and prescription medicines.
A list of conditions we frequently see (keep in mind that Fibromyalgia is our emphasis):
- Osteoporosis (minor only)
- Polymyalgia Rheumatica
- Psoriatic Arthritis
- Sciatica without severe numbness or weakness such as foot drop
- Tendinitis & Bursitis (minor only)
- Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, and other inflammatory arthritits: Dr Barnett strongly prefers to restrict his practice to complimentary services in cooperation with a Board-Certified Rheumatologist for these inflammatory conditions, but may temporarily accept a limited number of patients who cannot afford a rheumatologist, depending on the severity of their disease.
A doctor who can appreciate what it is like to suffer….Dr. Barnett suffers from fibromyalgia.
Fibromyagia: A syndrome charicterized by wide-spread chronic pain, fatigue, along with sleep problems, muscle weakness, memory/focus/sleeping problems, bladder problems, restless legs, numbness/tingling, irritable bowel, depression, anxiety, as well as other neurologic sensitivities.
Dr. Barnett has been treating musculoskeletal conditions for 20+ years, beginning with acupuncture, then holistic chiropractic, and finally with naturopathic medicine, which broadened his scope to include prescription medications along with additional naturopathic approaches. His interests (in part from himself suffering from fibromyalgia) and skills have caused him to gradually evolve this major part of his practice to focus on chronic musculoskeletal condtions, with particular emphasis on Fibromyalgia.
The hallmark of fibromyalgia is wide-spread pain, but almost always includes fatigue not relieved by sleep. It is diagnosed primarily by physical examination, history taking and patient interview. Labs, imaging, or other special tests are only useful to rule out other similar or overlapping diseases, which is an important part of a fibromyalgia workup. It is important to rule out other potential causes of symptoms commonly associated with fibromyalgia.
Genetics is thought to be responsible for about half of the risk, while environmental factors are thought to account for the remainder. Stress is probably the most significant environmental factor — both physical and emotional stress. Past infection is also a possible cause. However, while we will accept patients whose cause of fibromyalgia may have included infection, we will not get into diagnosing or treating the old infection itself. This is an area for a clinic which specializes in chronic / exotic infections — an infectious disease specialist.
Fibromyalgia is now recognized as a true medical condition by the American College of Rheumatology the NIH, but was first received with skepticism by the medical community because of the wide range of symptoms and lack of any specific lab, imaging, or other objective tests for diagnosis. Other symptoms besides the classic one of wide-spread chronic pain, that are associated with fibromyalgia are muscle weakness, memory/focus/sleeping problems, bladder problems, restless legs, numbness/tingling, irritable bowel, depression, anxiety, and neurologic sensitivity to noise/lights/temperature/chemicals & medications.**
**We do not treat ptients who are hypersensitive to noise, lights, temperature, smells, etc, and especially medications.
Looking for a doctor who will treat you as a unique person? Standard practice of conventional medicine is geared toward achieving a high rate of success treating the most typical presentations of discrete diseases. However, as an integrative medicine physician, most of Dr. Barnett’s patients are not so easy. This is probably because Dr. Barnett’s approach attracts patients where the conventional approach has failed to treat their symptoms satisfactorily. These patients usually find that integrative medicine (a doctor with one foot in and one foot out of conventional medicine) is the ideal combination for treating cases where a conventional approach has failed to yield satisfactory results.
